June Message

It’s been a while since I’ve written about The Note-Ables band. However, I recently had one of those moments of remembering what truly wonderful and professional musicians they are. As happens every summer, the band is learning new songs for many upcoming events. And as happens every summer, I try to push them beyond their comfort zone. And as always, they are blowing me away with their talent!

The band is learning almost a dozen new songs – everything from traditional Italian ballads for our Macaroni Grill fundraiser, to newer songs by the Black Crowes and Smashmouth, to 80s classics by Journey and the Stray Cats, to new bluegrass tunes for the Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival in August. There are not many bands that are so motivated to put in the time and energy to push their limits as musicians and individuals. And they challenge me to do the same, which I love.

If you haven’t heard The Note-Ables recently, I strongly encourage you to come to some of the many gigs we have planned in the next few months. You can also check out (and buy!) their new CD on our website. All of our classes will perform throughout the day at the Biggest Little Music Festival on July 5th as well, and we’ll be finalizing the schedule within the next couple of weeks.

– Manal

Note-Worthy:
Sarah Toney

Sarah ToneyHi! My name is Sarah Toney and I’m the newest addition to the Note-Able Music Therapy Services crew! I’m the Development Director, which means I’ll be spreading the word about Note-Able Music Therapy Services throughout the region to let everyone know what a wonderful organization NMTS is, and what good work is happening right here.

You may know me already, since I currently own and operate Hi Point Coffee and Café in Reno. I decided to expand my community involvement and Note-Able Music Therapy Services is a great opportunity for me to do just that. Not only am I a musician with experience in growing organizations, but my values are in tune with NMTS. I’ve always believed that it is important for each of us to be able to fully express ourselves and be acknowledged for our contributions to the world, regardless of our abilities. I believe music has an amazing potential to facilitate personal expression, elicit joy and foster community.

If you have a story you think we should share with the community about Note-Able Music Therapy Services, send me an email at SarahToney@note-ables.org. I look forward to getting to know you!

Looking to the Future:
Endowment Fund Founding Circle

There is only ONE month left to become a member of the
NMTS Endowment Founding Circle!

One of our proudest accomplishments of 2013 was to establish an endowment fund through the Community Foundation of Western Nevada. The fund was set up to guarantee that inclusive music programs and music therapy services will be available in our community for many years to come.

In honor of our 10th anniversary, our goal is to raise $100,000 by June 30th 2014. We are more than a quarter of the way there, and we know that we can reach our goal! The fund will of course be available for investment throughout the years. However, we are offering individuals, organizations, and businesses who contribute prior to July 1 the opportunity to become members of our Founding Circle. As a member of the Founding Circle, you will occupy a special place in our organization – and your generosity will always be part of the legacy of NMTS.

There are many ways to contribute to the Note-Able Music Therapy Services endowment – monthly giving, donations in honor or memory of a loved one, stocks, insurance gifts, and of course legacy gifts and bequests. Please call or email us to learn more about how you too can be part of our Founding Circle and join us as we embark on this exciting new journey.

Music Therapy in the News

Heartbeat music therapy helps parents cope with loss of teen

A music therapist who works with terminally ill children and their families at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital has begun creating musical memories using the heartbeats of dying patients. Brian Schreck records the thump of a patient’s heartbeat using an improvised stethoscope microphone, and then lays an instrumental version of their favorite song over the top. The result is a precious preservation of the patient’s humanity, says Schreck.
