March is an interesting month around here. It is a combination of down time after the big event and gearing up for everything we have going on in the spring and summer (make sure to check our website and mark your calendars!). It is also grant and conference season for me, which means a lot of research and writing. Last week I received an unexpected email challenging the evidence-based legitimacy of music therapy. I was taken aback at this, but it reminded me that we as music therapists still have a long way to go in presenting evidence that our services provide a beneficial and cost effective addition to other forms of care.

Like music therapists across the country, we in Nevada are advocating for Medicaid, Medicare, and insurance reimbursement. There is an abundance of anecdotal evidence showing the value of music therapy in improving physical and mental health. We are good at sharing stories, but we need to be better at communicating the many research-based outcomes of music therapy. Stories are important – they are why we do what we do – but data is as important, if not more. Sara and I both have a passion for research, and we are in the process of designing a couple of exciting research projects. Believe it or not, I think it’s going to be fun, and I am really looking forward to the opportunity to improve the recognition and legitimacy of our field, both in Nevada and across the country!

Well, we are only six weeks into the new year, and things have gotten off to a phenomenal start here at Note-Able Music Therapy Services. On the therapy front, we have started two new music therapy contracts – one with Circle of Life Community Hospice and one with the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System. We now have more than 30 individual music therapy clients, and another 60 participants in our other on-site classes.

On the performance and outreach front, we performed as part of the Renown Healing Arts Concert Series, put on our 9th annual Evening of Romance, sang for the opening of the 77th legislative session, and helped with The Therapy Sessions social media campaign put on by Ad2 Reno. Sara gave two community music therapy presentations, Sheena attended the statewide Volunteer and Corporate Engagement Summit in Las Vegas, and we all somehow managed to keep the day-to-day operations afloat. What a team!

We have set the bar pretty high in the past few weeks, but we are just getting started. In addition to planning our annual spring recital, Artown concert, and Noodles and Notes, we are thrilled to be celebrating our 10th anniversary as a nonprofit organization! We have lots of exciting things planned throughout the year, and we are asking YOU to join us in remembering and looking forward to the future. What are your favorite memories of NMTS? Was there a concert or event that touched your life? Was there a class or therapy session that made a strong impression? Have you made special friends through your involvement with NMTS? What things do you want to see us do in the next ten years? We want to hear from you, and will be featuring your stories in the newsletter and on our website throughout the year. And speaking of looking ahead, make sure to mark your calendars for these events: Tenth Anniversary Celebration Brunch (May 5th), Spring Recital (May 18th), Teen Camp (June 17th -21st), and Artown (July 18th). See you soon!

Anniversaries are a time to reflect upon where you have been and to look forward to where you are going. 2013 marks our tenth year of bringing the joy of creative expression to children and adults throughout northern Nevada. We are so proud of what we have accomplished over the past ten years. Note-Able Music Therapy Services started as a 12-member band of adults with disabilities, a volunteer director, and a storage closet. Our four passionate and committed staff members now serve more than 350 people per year. The Note-Ables performing group now reaches more than 6,000 audience members throughout northern Nevada and northeastern California.

As our tenth year gets underway, we are pleased to be working with Ad2Reno, a nonprofit organization of marketing and public relations professionals aged 32 and younger. This talented group has chosen Note-Able Music Therapy Services to be the beneficiary of a free year-long integrated marketing campaign. With their skills and expertise, we are truly excited about all that 2013 will bring…and we are thrilled to be looking forward to where we are going. Stay tuned!
